Is there a chance for an amicable relationship after divorce?

When a marital relationship ends, New York parents might find it difficult to believe that they could ever have an amicable relationship afterward. Fortunately, the parties can choose how they want the divorce proceedings to go, and they can make a conscious decision to work together. Doing so could provide a foundation that the parents could build on in the future.

One of the first things that New York parents who are divorcing can do is make an agreement not to be contentious. Giving in to the adversarial process can be tempting, but it will not serve the parties in the future as they continue to raise their children. Once the decision is made to put the needs of the children first, negotiations regarding custody can proceed.

In many instances, despite the end of the marital relationship, each party is able to acknowledge that the parental relationship should continue. The agreement negotiated by the parties can set boundaries for the parents and establish rules of conduct that both parents agree to follow regarding their interactions with each other and the children. Reaching a mutually satisfactory agreement could make each parent invested in making it work.

A divorce does not mean the end of the family -- it only means the end of the marital relationship. A child custody agreement that allows each parent as much time as possible with the children is not only good for the children, but for the parents as well. No one expects divorcing parents to be best friends, but if they are able to develop a new kind of relationship that ultimately benefits the whole family.
