When not to file during a divorce

The impending divorce between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie took an interesting turn last week when Pitt's attorneys did not file a response to Jolie's divorce petition, apparently to prevent a "nasty legal battle" from commencing. This may seem unusual, as failure to respond to court deadlines can lead to very unfortunate consequences.

Family courts should account for the stay-at-home dad

A recent study found that between 1989 and 2012, the number of stay-at-home dads nearly doubled. This phenomenon reflects changing social norms when it comes to gender and parenting roles. It is no longer an oddity for a man to take a more active role in the raising of his children.

Consider your retirement and your divorce

Marriage can be hard work. For many couples, by the time they approach their "golden years," they may have had enough. Their partner may have become inattentive, mean, unfaithful, or they may have simply aged out of their marriage. Thirty years can be a long time and who you are at 55 or 65 may be a long way from where you were at 25 or 35.

You know things are out of hand when

In an unusual case, a judge in a child custody dispute is facing a judicial disciplinary hearing. This case is not from New York, but serves as a lesson in how not to proceed with a divorce and custody matters. The judge was facing a hearing over a decision last year where she sent three children to the county's Children's Village, a youth home, after they refused to have lunch with their father.

Don't delay your divorce filing; the NY courts are already behind

Once you begin your divorce, you want it to complete as soon as possible. You do not want to have to live in a limbo of no longer being a couple, but not being fully separate. You know, even if you have a low-conflict, uncontested divorce, there will be some time for the administrative process your settlement and grant you your divorce, but you hope it will be done quickly so you can get on with your life.

Considering divorce after 50? Here's what you need to know

Maybe you've had an inkling all along that the end would come. Perhaps you've grown apart over the years or an act of betrayal cost your trust. Regardless of the reason, calling it quits after age 50 can be extraordinarily life-altering, even more so if you've spent decades together and planned to grow old in retirement with one another.
